Hair Transplant Over Scar

Overview

Hair doesn’t naturally grow in scar tissue because there aren’t any hair follicles in a scar.

The hair follicle transplantation on the scar tissue is more difficult than grafting on normal tissue because the scar is accompanied by poor blood circulation and stiffness of tissue. It’s not like regular skin at all, so scar tissue can’t accept a typical hair transplant where hair is inserted into existing follicles. In order to transplant hair onto a scar, a surgeon will graft hairs that are still contained in their follicles into the scar. This lets the hair begin taking root and growing again once they make contact with blood vessels.

Reasons & Challenges

What is the reason behind it?

Scars present in the scalp, beard or eyebrow can be concealed with hair transplant surgery. Today, it’s possible to have natural-looking results to those who seek to look better or younger by undergoing hair transplants.

What are the challenges or special considerations while operating in such conditions?

An insufficient blood supply can affect both the growth rate of the hair and the grafts’ chance of survival. The blood supply of scars on the scalp can vary significantly according to their type and so there is no guarantee a hair transplant can completely conceal a scar. Hair transplants on scar tissue require close aftercare to make sure they implant successfully. You may also need multiple procedures because of the initial lack of blood flow to the area. If the scarring is accompanied by severe tissue growth, the excess tissue must first be removed. Rare complications include: infection, intense pain or itching, pus or fluid draining from the surgical area, crust forming around the surgical area, further hair loss.

At Folliderm, our skilled surgeons are well-versed in these complexities and excel in providing tailored solutions for scar hair transplants. We carefully evaluate each case, considering factors like the scar’s size, type, and location, as well as the availability of donor hair. Our meticulous pre-operative planning and advanced techniques ensure that you receive the best possible outcome, with hair that blends seamlessly and looks natural.
