Approved Medications

There are many hair loss medications on the market that promise to prevent further loss and regrow hair. However, there are only two medicines that are approved for hair loss.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil was the first FDA-approved medication for the treatment of hair loss. It is available as a solution, lotion, and foam, which is to be applied locally over bald areas.

Minoxidil should be applied to the scalp once or twice a day, according to the doctor’s prescription. The medication only works if it is in direct contact with the scalp (not the hair) and only works in areas where it is applied.

The most common side effect reported after minoxidil use is irritation on the scalp which manifests as flaking, itching, and dryness.

Finasteride

Finasteride is an oral medication that decreases levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone in the scalp and hence prevents dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone-induced thinning of hair.

The main side effect of finasteride is sexual dysfunction however at a dose of 1 mg/day, this side effect is rare.

Note

  • Medication is believed to stimulate present hair follicles but cannot bring back those that have been lost. Therefore, the major benefit of medication seems to be in its ability to slow down or halt hair loss, or regrow hair in parts of the scalp, where the hair is thin. It does not seem to grow hair in completely bald areas. This limits its effectiveness in cases of extreme hair loss.
  • The benefits of medication will stop if it is discontinued. Over two to six months following discontinuation, the hair loss pattern will generally return to the state that it would have been reached if the medication had never been used. So Medical Therapy has to be continued to keep the improvement sustained. Hence long-term treatments with these medicines can be expensive and can have side effects.
  • Increased hair fall during the first 3 months of treatment might be noticed. This generally is an indication that the treatment is working, so the treatment should not be discontinued unless there are side effects.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves the administration of “cocktails” of natural plant extracts, homeopathic agents, vasodilators, finasteride and minoxidil, and vitamins into the skin between hair follicles of the scalp using micro-needles. It is known to prevent hair loss and boost hair growth.

Low-Level Laser Therapy

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a newer method to treat hair loss. It involves the use of specific lasers which stimulate hair growth. The laser device can be either clinic-based or home-based (laser combs or helmet) where patients can take treatment at home.
