If you’re noticing significant hair loss, such as finding hair on your pillows, hairbrushes, or in shower drains, or if you’re seeing bald spots or thinning areas on your scalp, it could be due to a condition known as Alopecia.

What is Alopecia?

Alopecia is the medical term for one of the primary causes of hair loss. While it’s normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day, hair loss exceeding this amount may become a concern. Alopecia can have various causes, which are primarily categorized into two types: Scarring Alopecia and Non-Scarring Alopecia.

1. Scarring Alopecia

Scarring Alopecia is characterized by permanent damage to the hair follicles and surrounding skin. It can result from mechanical injuries, burns, radiation, or skin diseases. In such cases, the hair cannot regrow with medication. A hair transplant is often the most effective solution for Scarring Alopecia.

2. Non-scarring Alopecia

Non-Scarring Alopecia is the loss of hair without any scarring of the scalp. In these cases, the hair follicle remains intact, and regrowth is possible. Non-Scarring Alopecia can present in various forms, including:

  • Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Hair Loss)
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Telogen Effluvium
  • Anagen Effluvium
  • Traction Alopecia
  • Trichotillomania

In this article, we will focus on Androgenetic Alopecia, also known as Male Pattern Baldness in men and Female Pattern Baldness in women, the most common cause of hair loss.

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Hair loss typically begins at the crown and temple areas. At the temple, it starts at the front hairline and moves backward, a phenomenon known as Bitemporal Recession. Hair loss at the crown starts as a whorl at the back of the head and spreads outward, resulting in a circular bald spot, commonly referred to as Crowning. This progresses through different stages, with each stage showing more hair loss than the previous one. The Hamilton-Norwood scale is used to measure the degree of male pattern baldness.

What is Female Pattern Baldness?

In women, the first signs of Female Pattern Baldness may include a widening hairline or a feeling that the hair is less thick than usual. Over time, the hair loss becomes more diffuse, leading to noticeable thinning. Unlike male pattern baldness, women typically do not experience frontal hairline recession. Hair loss is less common in women than in men, but it often increases with age.

Differences Between Male and Female Pattern Baldness

  • Men tend to lose hair in the front, crown, and middle parts of the scalp, whereas women experience hair thinning starting with the widening of the central part.
  • Women generally have diffuse thinning rather than the distinct bald patches seen in men.
  • The frontal hairline in women typically remains unaffected, while it gradually recedes in men.
  • Only about 12% of women experience temporal thinning, compared to over 80% of men who show temporal thinning as one of the early signs of hair loss.

Androgenetic Alopecia / Baldness Treatment

For Androgenetic Alopecia, the hair follicles are permanently damaged, so regrowing hair in affected areas is not possible. However, there are treatment options to stop further hair loss. The most effective treatments include:

A hair transplant is the most effective solution for restoring lost hair. You can read more about the process of hair transplants in Nepal at Folliderm Hair Transplant Center.
